Anybody in Tokyo who has a car or is remotely interested in cars should get over to Super Autobacs in Shinonome (near Odaiba). This store has just about anything you need for your automobile and provides the full range of services from changing oil to audio installation to alignment to dyno etc. They have a huge pit area with about 30 stations and a whole other building just for motorcycles. It’s like Yodobashi Akiba for cars!! The only thing they don’t do is body work. There are many Autobacs and Super Autobacs around Japan but this one is the biggest one I’ve ever been to. The regular Autobacs only perform a limited set of services and just sell the essentials, while at Super Autobacs you can get every kind of interior amenity or accessory imaginable to completely pimp out your ride. On more than one occasion I’ve seen a busload of tourists visiting the store just to buy stuff. If you’ve never driven anywhere in Tokyo you’ve probably never even seen an Autobacs because they’re generally not located near any train station. Although this one is quite near the Shinonome station, it’s still out of the way.

You’re not allowed to take photos in the store and there are security cameras everywhere so I had to snap these quickly. This Super Autobacs has a great section for books and toys. At the far end there’s a section where you can try out Recaro sports seats. At the other end is a cafe where you can eat a hot dog while you wait for your oil change. They even have a cosmetic section for girls who get bored of waiting for their husband/boyfriend.

Here’s part of the pit area. It’s really big and has several entrances. At the far end is another building which is the Autobacs C@rs Showroom where they display and sell their custom made cars (monoCRAFT) which happen to be mostly Roadsters!

(1) In the lot there were several roadsters including this modified red NB coupe. (2)(3) Inside were 3 modified NCs including 2 PRHT (4) one of them was the Stormy Blue Roadster which is the one I have on order. This is the first time for me to see this colour in person. It’s a very deep rich blue. Although I hate those headlights.

The fixed head coupe looks interesting. Very Italian old school. Could do with some “old” wheels though. Alfa Cromodoros might do the trick.
For Roy- Check the new firmware for your GRD. Good and useful according to DPReview Forums.
Wow! Next time you go, let me know. I want to go with you.
oh ..
>”It’s like Yodobashi Akiba for cars!!”
OK, I get it !!
I never been in a Super Autobacs… Have you had service there before? Wonder how careful they are when servicing a car.
That really is a vibrant blue. When I was a boy, my dad owned a Mercury in Midnight Blue. This blue reminds me that. Give that Stormy Blue a good polish and wax treatment, at night it will glow.
Edward, I went to one Autobacs a long time ago to change transmission oil and they ended up putting in a different oil from the one I wanted which pissed me off. However, they did a good job on my alignment. Personally, I don’t go there for any kind of servicing. I go to a roadster specialist who know my car inside and out.
Thanks Roy… Don’t blame you, always best to take your car to someone who is a specialist.
Wow, that’s like a Pep Boys or a Giant Canadian Tire automotive store.
