You Only Live Twice

is my favorite Bond film not just because it takes place in Japan but because it has some great scenes with the Toyota GT2000, the first Japanese Sports Car. Only 337 coupes were produced and two convertible models were made specially for the movie because Sean Connery was too big to fit into the coupe. I saw one of them at the Toyota Mega Web in Odaiba a few years ago but I think I deleted the photo I took, damn!

James Bond making a quick getaway. Check out how high that front end is raised as it peels out. Gotta try that with my car.
UPDATE: That’s the Hotel New Otani in Akasaka in the background.

Here’s a shot from the top and another one as it drives by the Yoyogi Olympic Stadium.

That Crown is catching up to the GT2000 but a helicopter with a big magnet comes to their rescue.

Some other interesting scenes:

(1) “Tiger” Tanaka takes Bond on his private train. Hmmmm, that looks alot like the Marunouchi Line (2) Bond arrives at the Japanese SECRET Ninja Camp which just so happens to be Himeji-jo, the most famous castle in Japan.

Sounds like a good movie. I’ll have to check it out at Tsutaya’s one day. I bet other than Himeji Castle I won’t recognize anything else though. But just the fact that it’s a Bond movie in Japan plus it has a 2000GT (A car that I could never get when I was playing Gran Turismo 2 on my PlayStation a while back) makes me wanna watch it. :)

There are a couple of scenes in Tokyo where the streets look awfully familiar but since it’s from 1967 most of the building have changed so I can’t be sure. The building in the first two photos is one of the hotels in Tokyo but can’t remember which one.

I love the toyota gt2000 and am currently in the process of fabbing my own from a 1:18 model.
I would love to see a magazine, web site or book dedicated to the fine automobiles produced in Japan throughout the 60’s and 70’s. Anyone got any info?
Cheers, Scott
