South exit of Shinjuku station on any night there’s always some band playing some generic pop song. I thought they looked a bit freaky standing in front of those posters of people and did a double take when walking past. Actually, they weren’t even a band, they were singing to some prerecorded music like karaoke but they were pretty good.
Street Band

which place has the better collection of street bands: this station or yoyogi park/harajuku?
Geez, I dunno. I haven’t been anywhere near Yoyogi Park or Harajuku on a Sunday for as long as I can remember.
BUT, I do have lots of pictures of the street bands there from 1988. Man, that was a great time…Maybe I will scan them and post them here.
Does anyone in Japan wear shorts in the summer? In most of the photos I see, all the guys are wearing long pants, regardless of the heat. The reason I ask is because I am going to Tokyo in a week and a half for Wonder Festival Summer and I don’t want to be the only dude in Tokyo in shorts!

Here’s an idea. Why not bring a pair of shorts AND a pair of long pants?
the girl with the suitcase is cute… ; )
Duh, now why didn’t I think of that?
I’ve got plenty of wardrobe and plan to bring long, short, business, and casual. Nice to see that you are such a friendly guy, though, and are willing to ofer such helpful advice.
I was just asking a friendly question, dude. Didn’t know I was gonna offend anyone by making a simple inquiry.
Lighten up, wouldja?
Dude, I was just poking fun…sorry.
OK, serious reply: don’t know where you are coming from or if you have been to Japan before but summer in Tokyo is really hot and humid and sticky in a way that makes you feel like you want to wash your face every 10 minutes. Shorts are a good idea for sightseeing and going here and there but if you are going to meet anyone for business or in any kind of formal setting (like at night in a nice restaurant) it’s a good idea to wear pants. Most people who come to Tokyo always feel underdressed cause everyone wears a suit even in summer.
I wore shorts for 6 days straight while crusing around Tokyo last week. I didn’t feel out of place at all. No more then a gaijin would in the first place anyway. Like Roy said, unless you have business do yourself a favor - go with what makes you feel good in the heat.
