OK, this year for sure I’m serious about getting into shape.
My goal is to weigh 65kg with 12% body fat which translates to 57.2kg lean body mass and 7.8kg body fat. The last few weeks I got really fat. I didn’t eat that much crud but I sat around the house most of the time which means no calories being burned. I got on the scale this morning and my weight was 65.8kg with 24.8% body fat (16.3kg of FAT! Yikes!!) Imagine carrying around a iMac G5 with you everywhere. I’m aiming to reach my target muscle-fat ratio by end of April which means I need to gain about 8kg of muscle and lose the same amount of fat. Actually I’ll be happy if I can get to 15% body fat.
Stayed tuned for pictures of my rock-hard abs and pecs of steel.

Wow, how tall are you? We’re just 6kg apart!
166cm. I hide the fat well but it’s there…
BTW, I was 62kg at the beginning of December
How do you measure the total body fat? You can’t “scrape it of” and put it on the scales separately. So you measure it in an indirect way?
There are a bunch of different ways to measure body fat. Some are more accurate than others. The most accurate requires you to get on a seat and lower yourself into a pool. Another method is pinching/measuring fat at different parts of your body and using an equation to calculate, this one is a pain in the neck.
I just use a weight scale that measures body fat by sending an electronic current though your feet when you are on the scale. There are many of these at Bic. It’s easy and the one I have records it all into a USB stick which I can download and plot on a graph.
The scale may not be accurate but if you measure yourself at the same time every day with the same conditions, like right after you wake up, you can measure your “relative” progress which is really the purpose. Anyway, measuring body fat in the morning and night can be completely different.
I would imagine with the japanese diet and a daily workout you should be able to drop the pounds. I always shed fat after a month in tokyo.
Awesome! that is a good resolution to keep. I am trying to beef and tone up as well this year. Getting into a relationshippu, has amassed my weight by…ge ge ge…. 33 kilo….OOOOmg…that must be wrong…15lbs…oh…roughly 7kg… phew…ok, as Komori no Obachama used to say, ‘More Better!’ But it’ll be harder for me cuz I’m going to be eating really well while in Japan.
wish me luck!
Roy, thanks for explaining.
DD, some Japanese food like tonkatsu and tempura and ramen are really fattening but I guess you weren’t refering to that.
Wilson, good luck!
J., no problem, let me know what your bodyfat is when you get it measured.

We’ll have this talk one year from today, 05/01/07.
Whether you have achieved your goal to reduce your weight :-).
Roy,
I do jog regularly to loose some weight. Started doing that when my BMI exceeded 25. And now I do weigh myself regularly as well, to see the progress I make and to see when I reach my target. But I never took the trouble of getting a reading on the fat percentage. The ways of doing that (as described by you above, and by others) sound too much of a hassle to me. Yes, you may call me lazy.
hehehe … stay away from the tonkatsu and Family Mart fast foods ;-)
I eat A LOT of natto and uni, rice and soup for breakfast and hit my local fish shop for dinner (okay I cheat @ yoshinoya on the weekends). Key is to stay active too
.

Thanks Roy…but first day in Japan and what do I do? eat Ramen. Not even the real good kind too. Instant kind got me already. I couldn`t help myself…aaa…oishikaata! no tonkatsu or tempura? why is food in Japan SO GOOD? i`ll just start dieting in USA instead. I`m here to enjoy myself. right right…its a VACATION!
How tall are you Roy? I plan on getting back in shape this year too. I am 5′ 8″ and weigh about 185 lbs. I would like to get back down to between 170-175. My problem is just getting back into a regular exercise program as I am a pretty healthy eater.
Good luck and hopefully it will work out for both of us.
Kirk
I’m only 5′5″ and rather small build so I’m pretty heavy for my size. I’m trying to exchange the fat with muscle but for me the diet part is the hardest. While the Japanese diet is supposedly relatively healthy, junk food is too readily available.
