Powerbook G4

Yes, the rumors are true. I did indeed go out and blow a whole ton of cash on a new 15″ Powerbook last weekend. There were a few recent incidents that conspired to make this happen. The first was upgrading my iMAC to 10.4 Tiger, the improvement to MAC Mail made me want to use the client as my main mailer. The only reason I never wanted to use a MAC for my main machine was because there was never a mail client I liked enough. These days all my core computer needs are shifting over to MAC so I guess I could use a Powerbook mainly. The second was the hard drive on my 2.5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30 up and died two weeks ago. Made me start to think about getting a new laptop. Next was the Mactel announcement at WWDC and lots of other MAC bloggers out there saying that the Powerbook with G5 ain’t gonna happen so might as well get a G4 Powerbook now. Fourth, I got the bonus at work and since the car’s been paid off…so with the entire universe sending out such a strong message plus the fact that it’s a totally sexy machine that I’ve lusted after for so long, well I just really had no choice, you see.

Congrats on the big buy!

Did you give Thunderbird a try? I’ve been using it since the 1.0 release and love it.

Thanks Patrick!

I have tried Thunderbird before (on windows) although I remember vaguely there was something I didn’t like about it. It was probably something trivial like the icons reminded me of Netscape Communicator or something like that. I’ll try it out again.

Now this is just the top of my head but since i’ve started reading your page I seem to recall, a new digital SLR, a new digital ixy, a new ipod shuffle, a new Sony PSX, a new N9-something series cell phone, and now a new powerbook G4, good lord man! Might you have abandoned your self-taxing system already?

Rick, this is Roy we’re talking about, here. This is nothing new. ;)

Roy, how is it? Cool, hip, sexy? I think I might buy one myself. Hell, my overtime tomorrow will pay for a big chunk of it…

Yes Rick it’s unfortunately true. I’ll be the first to admit that I spend an incredible amount of money on “toys” however, to try and justify my lifestyle, I don’t spend much on going out drinking & eating out, traveling etc. Why is it that spending say 50,000yen a month going on a trip considered a worthy pursuit while if I were to spend that amount each month buying something, it’s considered extravagant? I mean I could go somewhere for a few days and not really enjoy myself or I can buy a really nice camera and have tons of fun taking lots of pictures for months after that. The point is that people spend their money in different places. I knew a guy once who would go out and spend 20,000yen for dinner every other night. But he wouldn’t spend 1,000yen to buy a pair of socks. Then he complained to me that he didn’t have money to buy a computer.

Having said that, I agree there is a limit and maybe I should check myself into gadgets anonymous :(

And believe it or not, the taxing myself system is continuing!!!

Jim, you know me too well..

Anyway, it’s a lovely machine but if you plan to use the trackpad you might want to try it out before you buy. The way the keyboard is laid out it seems a little too far to the left so your right hand is over the trackpad most of the time and the mouse moves around as you type. It’s a bit annoying and I never noticed that at the store.

Yay! So maybe the next time I ask you for a software, you’ll actually have it! HeHe!
