Canon Wordtank G50

Based on Darren’s recommendation I bought this denshi jisho from a shop I found on kakaku.com. I ordered it a week ago and immediately got an automated email message saying that the order was processed and that they take pride at speedy service etc. Anyway, a few days pass and nothing, I send two more emails, no response. I call them, no answer. Yesterday, I sent an email asking to cancel my order and that I had ordered it from another place. It only took 15 minutes before I got a response saying they had just shipped it. No apology though. Oh well, at least it got here. The cost 18,000yen (1) That’s a pretty thick user’s manual, it’s thicker than the thing itself (2) I didn’t notice this in the store but from the side you can see that it has a slight concave curve. That’s so you can put it into your back pocket and it’ll fit nicely around the curve of your butt.

I’m sure that’s a lot cheaper than when I got it - price drops or good shopping? I hope the G50 helps your studies like it has done for me.

Thanks Darren, it’s almost the same price as in Bic. It’s 25,000yen still but they give you 25% points (I think) so really you save about 5,000yen. I just don’t really need the points and wasn’t in any hurry to get it so just ordered it online. You can find a lot of good deals on Yahoo Auction and Kakaku.com.

Thats a pretty shallow concave. If that fits the curve of your butt, you’re in trouble man. hehe. ;)

I was referring to your butt ;)

I still have a Canon Wordtank IDX-9600. I have heard that they don’t sell this model anymore, but I really like the kanji search function where you can simultaneously input the radical stroke number; and/or kana reading; and/or full character stroke count. The newer ones I checked out at Shinjuku Yodobashi Camera in December sucked as far as I could tell. You could do either radical stroke number or total stoke number, but not both simultaneously.

Sometimes it’s really hard to tell what the radical is; and try wading through the kanji with 12 strokes.

There is also an English display function in the IDX-9600. Did they discontinue the style because it was too gaijin friendly or because, being gaijin oriented, there weren’t enough sales?

Hey Canon! Bring back the IDX-9600! Or one similar but improved!

Yes, I know that no one from Canon will ever read this. The above is a rhetorical demand.

I’m hoping that I was just too dense to appreciate the newer models. So really, how is the G50?

I remember Neil B and Steve praising the Canon Wordtank so I thought this one would be good too. I haven’t played with it long enough to find out whether those functions are still there or not..

Speaking of Steve he is big on the book “The New Pearl Harbor.” A very good, easy to read, and eye-opening book that details a number of questions about the destruction of the WTC in September 11, 2001. If you read the book you will likely demand further investigations that can’t be hindered by the Bush administration.

Another eye-opener is “America’s Secret Establishment: An Introduction to the Order of Skull and Bones” by Antony C Sutton. Considering that both presidential candidates of 2004 were members of this secret society it might be a good idea to look into what it actually is. (What it actually is is pure evil as might be expected from a society of the wealthy and powerful that craves and demands total secrecy even though the country they operate in purports to be a democratic, free, and open society).

Really, both books are must reads for those who wonder about the madness so extant in the contemporary world.

The G50 can do kanji searches as you describe - using on/kun yomi, parts of kanji (e.g. ‘口’ in 語), stroke count and radicals at the same time.

Thanks Darren, good to know. Now I don’t have to read the manual, I’ll just ask you! ;)

I would also like to add my thanks Darren. The G50 does indeed seem to be a better way to go than the ancient clunker I have.
