Taiyaki

There’s always a long line to buy a taiyaki at this taiyaki stand at the end of Shimotakaido’s shopping street. Taiyaki is the most common of the anko (sweet bean paste) filled Japanese snacks. It’s like a fish shaped waffle filled with anko. For ¥100 these taiyaki were relatively big in size and not too sweet. Most foreigners don’t like the taste of anko although if you live here long enough you develop a liking for it. Personally, I think if they filled these things with hot apple sauce or hazel-nut chocolate it would be really yummy. But I don’t think that will happen any time soon.

I went there a few times before and indeed they’re very good! I burnt my tongue the fist time though cause it was too hot. :)

Yeah, I burnt my tongue too. They were friggin’ hot!! But it was very crispy and not as chewy like other taiyaki.

This was probably the only thing I was allowed to eat outside meal times when I was a kid. Back then there was only anko, but now there is chocolate, cheese, coconut jam, blueberry etc. But anko is still my favourite.

I`t looks yummy! Do you know the Taiyaki station at Yotsuya? You can take a seat and have green tea for free.

I indeed developed a taste for anko over the years here in Tokyo.

Ah! Anko was one of the first Japanese foods that I tased when I was small. I’ve never had taiyaki before, but I’m sure it tastes great!

You’d be surprised to know they have those in Toronto too. You can get them in front of Galleria, a korean supermarket and i love the taste.

Wow. It seems like these things are not as unique to Japan as I thought. Shows you how little I know about other countries. I should definitely travel more, as well as make a trip back to Canada. It’s been ages.

Before you do, think about it. Do you really want to visit Canada? ;) Btw, which part of Canada are you from Roy? I’m guessing that you lived in the GTA before.
