Otokomae means manly or handsome. That’s the new way of marketing tofu. At the supermarket this morning, I had a good laugh at the hip names for these tofu. I don’t think I can translate them accurately but maybe someone else will take a stab at it. The name of the one above is a bit cut off. It’s called 風に吹かれて豆腐屋ジョニー. The company that makes these tofus is apparently a new venture business with a really funky website: 男前豆腐屋 The Symbol of Japan. Check it out.

Otokomae Tofu

Yeah, I love this “handsome TOFU”.
It’s really delicious, yum yum.
BTW, did you try it?? If didn’t, you’d better to try it. Usually I don’t like TOFU so much. But this “handsome one” is more sweet than usual one , but it’s not like sugar. That sweetness is came from natural soy beans, I think.
Anyways, pls try it.
I did buy one but haven’t tried it yet. Will it make me handsomer?
It’s a pretty interesting marketing ploy. I wonder if they are going after men because men are less likely to eat tofu than women.
BTW, do the markets mind your taking pictures inside of them? I’ve wanted to do that before but I’m afraid they’ll get worked up about it.
I saw the boss of this company on Bari Bari Value, He was a young guy (about 32) living in a small mansion but the uriage is nann oku en
Ha! funny enough my wife put me onto the otoko tofu…. I’ve been eating this stuff now for a few months… very good if I don’t say.
Hahaha what the hell you know the Japanese sure can get creative when they want to! Love tofu…wonder if they’re still available. If I were in Japan I’d give them a try.
For the top pic I’d probably go with something like “Johnny the wind chiseled tofu dude” and “Street brawler - Tofu Stud” (the name an obvious play on the Japanese word) for the lower right pic.
