New Office View of Tokyo
by Roy on March 5, 2008 19:42

New Office View
This week my company moved to a brand new office building in central Tokyo which is why I’ve been a bit busier than usually. Our new office has a fantastic view of Tokyo and even Mt. Fuji on a good day. This afternoon between meetings I took a few photos. They’re not that good so I’ll have to take my SLR to work some day and get better shots. The one above is looking towards Roppongi. At the right, you can see Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills just behind it. At the far left is Izumi Gardens.

New Office View
The view east from one of the meeting rooms. That cluster of buildings on the other side of the park is Otemachi. You can also see the Diet which is that pyramid shaped building near the centre.

And this shot is facing north-west. That’s Shinjuku in the background.

Mt.Fuji from Izu
by Roy on January 25, 2008 12:16

With the renewal of this site, I’ve decided to host all my images on Flickr from now on. I’m not going to bother moving all my older posts’ images to Flickr cause there are too many. I’m starting with this photo of Mt. Fuji taken from a small town on the west side of Izu last fall.

Tokyo Intersection #1

Google Street for Tokyo isn’t out yet so I’m starting my own series of street photos called “Guess the Tokyo Intersection!” This is the first installment and it’s soooo easy. I mean, c’mon, what gaijin could not guess this one, duh!!!

Roadster in Shimokitazawa
by Roy on May 25, 2007 07:23

roadster-in-shimokitazawa01.jpg
I was standing in front of the Docomo shop in Shimokitazawa looking at a girl when I heard the familiar sound of our beloved NA Roadster. Lo and behold a nice black one with the top down was making it’s way through the narrow streets of Shimokita. Now, if you’ve ever been to Shimokitazawa you’ll know that anyone in their right mind would never dream of driving in this area because of the narrow narrow streets and the large crowds. While it doesn’t appear to be so bad from the photo (above) it took this guy a few minutes to move 20 metres to this position. Too bad the street is a dead end.

Gohan Museum
by Roy on March 16, 2007 22:16

gohan-museum.jpg
While standing on the platform at Yurakucho station tonight and saw this sign for the Gohan Museum (Rice Museum) which is located in the International Forum. I must have walked right by that museum all this time without ever noticing it. Next time I should go there to eat some brown rice. That Lismo sign to the left is also very cool.

Heisei Fūzoku

Another double subway ad. This one for Shéna Ringö’s new album Heisei Fūzoku. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of her songs but I thought that I’d post this photo to send some link love over to Brad. He’s got one of the best Shéna Ringö fan blogs.

Storage Space
by Roy on January 14, 2007 16:00

Storage space can be expensive for a small business. It looks like this handyman keeps all his tools and parts in his mini-van. He can’t even use his rear view mirror. There’s a growing industry that caters to storage for your anime figures and other junk that you have to hide from your wife. Some of these companies are opening up under train tracks or in abandoned warehouses. Quraz has some storage facilities around Tokyo but their smallest space which is about 0.4-1 sq. metre, cost more than ¥5,200 a month. That’s quite a lot of money to pay for a tiny storage space. I can’t imagine what people would put in a small space like that.

Sky over Makuhari

sky_over_makuhari.jpg
Taken after some tiring convention, I don’t remember which one. Makuhari is quite far from the centre of Tokyo, half way to Narita, and in the early ’90s was designed to be an industrial city for high-tech businesses as part of the movement to de-centralize Tokyo to relieve population and traffic congestion. It didn’t work though and Makuhari is only half finished. This building is the WBG, World Business Garden and I used to come out here quite often for work. It’s a dull place but there’s a very nice big park and you can see blue skies. Except when it’s cloudy like on this particular day.

BTW, I found this very cool website while searching info about the WBG.

Cafe in Shimokitazawa

shimokitazawa_cafe.jpg
Getting tired of reading about Hong Kong? Here’s some cafe action in Shimokitazawa. My favorite cafe called ikaru-kan イカール館 has long since disappeared. It used to be above Zoff on the north side, there’s a staircase leading up to the shop. But now it’s gone. Even though it was a coffee shop, they had good food including the best chicken pilafe in Tokyo.

Hallowe’en Drawings
by Roy on October 30, 2006 19:36

halloween.jpg
Saturday evening, I arrived at the train station to see swarms of kids dressed up for Hallowe’en. The community had organized a Hallowe’en event and invited kids from around the neighborhood to come and enjoy games, live music and trick or treating at every shop in the shotengai. They had a stamp card and a map of the shotengai. When they arrived at each shop they’d get some candy and their maps stamped so they couldn’t keep coming and milk the shops dry. There was also a very cool Haunted House constructed underneath the train tracks. I would have gone in but I wasn’t in a costume. It was the first time for me to see any kind of Hallowe’en celebration in this country beside drunken gaijin in Roppongi.

Nissan GT-R
by Roy on February 22, 2008 21:33

GT-R
I made a turn out of Roppongi Hills parking lot this evening and found myself behind a brand new Nissan GT-R. It’s my first time to see this supercar in person. I missed seeing it at the Tokyo Motor Show last year cause I was sick with the flu and recovering from lasik. The GT-R is not the kind of car that I would buy but boy is it sweet. And sooo shiny too. I couldn’t get any decent photos of it except for this one before he turned onto Aoyama-dori and sped away from me. Now I gotta go to the dealer and see it up close.

Tokyo Intersection #2

Having to climb stairs to cross the street via an overhead bridge is very common in Tokyo although a big pain in the butt if you are lazy. But it’s fun to watch people overhead when you’re in a car. Can you guess this intersection?

Vending Machine Heaven
by Roy on March 12, 2007 21:24

vendingmachines.jpg
When I arrived in Japan in the summer of 1985 I was not prepared for the humidity. For the first time in my life, sweat dripped from my nose like hockey players you see on TV. I was completely soaked in sweat all day, constantly dehydrated and thirsty. Luckily for me, Japan is the land of vending machines and I could get a nice cold drink everywhere. Even at the top of Mt.Fuji!! I tried every single kind of drink there was and must have spent half of my money that summer on canned drinks. These days I hardly buy anything from a vending machine because I mostly just drink water and tea and coffee. I take vending machines for granted now, but it really is quite amazing how many vending machines there are in this country. And all of them are kept incredible clean and free from vandalism. Except this one. If you come to Japan, make sure you try some of the weird drinks from any of the vending machines you encounter. And if you’re a smoker, try all the cigarettes too. When my sister, a smoker, came to visit me years ago, she put a couple thousand yen into a cigarette machine, bought one of every kind of Japanese cigarette and smoked them all over her stay here. I think she stopped after smoking some short hopes

Another snapshot of one of my favorite places to chill out. The lobby at the Hotel Okura. I want a living room just like this.

Young couple in Shimokita
by Roy on December 3, 2006 23:35

shimokitazawa_scene.jpg
Shimokitazawa is a young people’s town. It’s a cosy place that always makes me feel nostalgic for old times. I could spend the entire day here just sitting around in all the cafes or hanging around in the shops. A new shop opens almost every day so there’s always something that I’ve never seen. Did I tell you it’s my favorite place in Tokyo?

Twinings

This subway ad was seen in the same place as this one. Do you think it’s aimed at women or men? Well, I don’t know about you but this ad kinda turns me on. I mean she’s sitting on a bed, right?

Yurakucho Crossing

When I bought the wide lens converter for my GR I took some test shots around Yurakucho in front of Bic Camera. This was one of those photos.

More Tokyo Tower
by Roy on November 7, 2006 00:02

tokyo_tower_wako.jpg
With me being super busy baking bread and earning a living, I won’t have much time to post new stuff (who knows though). But don’t worry! I promise something new everyday. I’ve been going through my photo archives and will be posting snapshots taken in the past. This is the view of our favorite Tokyo landmark from a tonkatsu restaurant which was just average and not worth mentioning. Actually, this isn’t old content the photo was taken yesterday at lunch.

Why do they put two of the same ad right beside each other? In my opinion, LESS is MORE. Then again, more of Shiho is not such a bad thing.
