Initial D Arcade Stage 4 Limited

I just found a good reason to visit Joypolis in Odaiba this summer. Now you can enjoy the Initial D arcade game sitting in the real cars!! Nice! The game is only there for the summer so if you are a hard core D fanboy better make sure you don’t miss it.
arcade-stage-4-limited-3.jpg arcade-stage-4-limited-4.jpg
I wonder if they actually have simulated engines rumble so it will feel like the car is running rather than just sitting there on tilt machine. It would be even better if they had another 90 inch screen behind the car so if you looked in the rear view mirror you could see your opponent behind you. That would be awesome. If you’re not into Initial D you might want to check out the 24 CTU Mission attraction where you have a fixed length of time (24 minutes?) and you get to pretend to be Jack Bauer to catch the terrorists and maybe get to torture them too.

Star Wars 30th Anniversary
by Roy on May 25, 2007 19:06

30 years ago today our lives were profoundly changed. Today is the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars. Anyone old enough can remember exactly where they were. I did not see the movie on this day but I recall staring at a colour photo of C3PO and R2D2 in the Toronto Star for a long time, and then carefully cutting out that photo to paste in a scrapbook. It was truly a spiritual moment. So tonight, go home, make some popcorn and watch the Star Wars trilogies AGAIN (you too Eddie) May the force be with you!

7-Elevens are selling PS3
by Roy on January 5, 2007 19:52

ps3_711.jpg
Has anyone else noticed that 7-Elevens all over Tokyo are selling PS3s and they have them in stock too? I’ve seen the same situation in at least a half a dozen 7-Elevens today. Usually they have 2 or 3 60GB ones sitting behind the counter. I guess this means that PS3 are no longer in demand. Not even 2 months since the launch! Now I feel kind of stupid lining up for 16 hours in Yurakucho when I can walk 5 minutes from home and get one.

Mii

That’s supposed to be me, I mean Mii. On the Wii you can configure your character to look like you. Although it’s a bit limiting. Since there was no option to choose rock-hard-chiseled-abs or Adonis arms, my mii doesn’t accurately look like me, I mean Mii ;-D

I was on TV tonight! Actually, it was my website…well, just a link to my website. But still!! (See top left). Our man Danny Choo was featured in the Super Blog segment of Blog TV, powered by Technorati Japan. The show introduces top ten search words, new blog services etc and in the last ten minutes a special guest appears to talk about their blog and blogs they like.
http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/10/blogtv3-thumb.jpg http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/10/blogtv4-thumb.jpg
Danny showed up as the Tokyo Stormtrooper and presented his Stairway to Heaven post and talked about how calling yourself “Otaku” was considered cool in western countries. Um..sorry to break this to you Danny but a geek is a geek no matter what word you use ;-)

You’ll be able to watch the segment on the Blog TV website shortly.

Tokyo Game Show 2006

Today was my first Tokyo Game Show. I’ve always managed to miss them in the past (1) Here’s the photo of the flimsy ticket and all the game freaks being corraled into the convention centre (2) Usually you enter from the second floor, but for this show they led you to an small entrance on the ground level which funneled everyone through a steel gate like you were being led into a dark gas chamber. Then as we turned the corner you could see the sign in lights. This is where every idiot (including yours truly) stopped and pulled out their cameras to take the photo thus slowing down the line to get in.

The show itself was very interesting and luckily Brad and Jean Snow were on hand so I could learn about what the hot new games were. I’m interested in games but I really don’t have the time or money to allow myself to get too into gaming. However, after seeing how advanced everything has gotten I’ve decided that I will line up to buy a PS3 when it comes out on November 11th. We all need some goals in life don’t we? ;-)

Millenium Falcon

I’m up at 5:00 am and sitting in front of the PC, feeling like I should upload some photos otherwise waking up so early would be for nothing. So here are some pics of that Millennium Falcon cutaway model at Blister. It costs more than 4,000 bucks! Blister has 3 floors in a building located on prime real estate in the middle of Shibuya. How it stays in business by selling spidey dolls and star wars figures is a complete mystery to me.

New Apple Ads

OK, I liked these new Apple Ads for about the first 10 minutes but now everytime I hit the Apple website they play automatically and it’s driving me crazy. Is this just me? Why can’t they just have an image with a “play” button. I hate being force fed media.

Comic Market
by Roy on April 23, 2006 18:58

http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/04/creation1-thumb.jpg
Amateur comics known as 同人誌 Dojinshi are big business. It was pure coincidence that I happen to be killing time in Ikebukuro on the weekend of the Sunshine Comic Creation. This is an event where any amateur comic artist can pay a few thousand yen for a spot at a table to sell their self-published comic, fan art etc. I don’t have very much interest in these types of comics or this brand of otaku sub-culture but it is quite overwhelming to see soo many people attracted to these events. It’s almost on par with the Tokyo Motor show in terms of numbers of visitors and this one isn’t even as big as Comiket which is held in August at Tokyo Big Site.

Nakano Broadway
by Roy on February 26, 2006 23:30

http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/02/nakano01-thumb.jpg
The otaku tour begins here. Nakano Broadway, also known as Nakano Sun Road, is in Nakano just west of Shinjuku. While Akihabara might be considered the otaku capitol of Japan, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of this otherwise normal shopping arcade is in my opinion the true birthplace of the whole otaku movement. Mandarake, a shop that bought and sold comics, toys and other collectibles had their humble beginnings here. They became famous because their employees would dress up as anime characters and customers could vote on them. The first time I visited was more than 15 years ago, before Mandarake began expanding and long before they opened up their bigger store in Shibuya in 1994. Since then Nakano Broadway gradually grew into a mecca for anime, toys etc tapering off recently when similar shops began opening up in Akiba. Today, I accompanied Brad and Joe who was visiting Japan. Nakano is a bit out of the way for me so I hardly ever make it up here anymore, but it was a good opportunity to see what new things were out there and take some colorful photos of toys. One of the shocking realizations was that I had forgotten the names of many robots I used to love. This may not necessarily be a bad thing. (above photo: Great Mazinger, I want)

Go home dude
by Roy on February 1, 2006 06:17

http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/02/gohome-thumb.jpg
It was cold and rainy late last night, yet this guy wasn’t about to go home. He was doing something on his PC which aroused my curiosity. What is so important that you can’t wait til you get home? It reminds me of something I saw a few years ago. A guy with a PowerBook (when they just came out) was sitting on the ground in the middle of Shimokitazawa station playing with his computer. He kept looking up to check if people were noticing him with his “cool” PC. I guess he had no friends to show it off to. Mac fans can be like that. Perhaps people thought the same of me and my friend when we brought our mobile PCs to the top of Mt. Fuji. But that was not because I wanted to show off. I made a bet that I could connect to the Net via analog mobile phone from the top and chat on ICQ. A bet that I won!!! Remember, we’re talking 1998 here. We were probably the first people to ever attempt such a thing. I should be in Wikipedia or something.

$50,000,000+ Original Gundam Plastic Model
by Roy on June 27, 2007 23:32

baribarivalue2000.jpg
Bari Bari Value is a TV show in Japan where they auction off stuff from celebrities and give the proceeds to charity. Tonight, they were auctioning off an original first series Gundam Plastic Model (from 27 years ago) and a poster for the latest Gundam Series (see link below). In less than an hour it was bidding up over the equivalent of $50 million US dollars. At least, that’s the current price. It may go even higher since there’s still 6 days left in the auction. Some Otakus have way too much money.

EDIT: It seems that they removed all the fake bids that drove the price up and now the bids are “realistic.” The current bid is now over ¥3,000,000 which is about $30,000 USD. That’s still quite a lot of money for a plastic model.

Tokyo Stormtrooper aka Danny Choo was the guest host on Blog TV tonight. I guess the regular hosts, the guy with the cowboy hat and that other chick, wanted to go out and do something normal tonight (it’s a live show) so they filmed this special segment about Akihabara which really didn’t have anything to do with Blogs. But anyway..

Kabutore カブトレ!Learn how to trade Japanese stocks on your Nintendo DS lite
by Roy on December 21, 2006 09:43

kabutore1.jpg kabutore2.jpg
Kabu カブ means “stock” and tore トレ is short for “trade.” I bought this game for the DS out of curiousity. It’s an interactive tutorial about how to do online stock trading put out by Konami. When I bought the game they gave me this net trading beginner’s guide by Zai magazine and a form to sign up for an account at Monex Securities. In Japan, a great part of the DS lite’s success is the huge number of non-gaming adults buying them to play educational games.

Kabutore カブトレ is one of these with a marketing tie-up to promote both Zai and Monex. A kind of online trading starter kit for DS lite and a pretty neat idea. The game itself is a very simple tutorial, the main character is a girl named “Nozomi” who was your classmate in high school. You meet her after 10 years and suddenly she invites you to go to an online trading coffee shop. It’s a lame story. I’ve only just started playing the game which begins at a time over a year ago because the Nikkei 225 starts at 12,291.73, and then progresses daily so you can see your investments go up or down. Unfortunately, there’s no real time information (obviously this would be impossible) and there are only a few stocks you can actually choose to trade, one of them being Konami (9766). But the details of the market data are pretty good. They even include a fairly complete set of Toyo Keizai fundamental data although I haven’t checked whether the data is real or fake. I’m still at the tutorial stages so there might be more depth to the game later on.
kabutore4.jpg kabutore3.jpg
There’s also a part where you use the pointer to “guess” the trend of the chart by drawing the missing trendline. You get points when you guess correctly. A kind of pointless exercise really. Like most guides to stock trading in Japan, the game deals mostly with how to execute a trade and examine charts (Japanese investors love charts) There’s no discussion of investment strategies or how to choose a good stock. This is not a surprise since online brokers make their money from transaction fees so they don’t want investors to buy and hold.

If you’re thinking about opening up an account and trading Japanese stocks this would be a fun way to learn the basics. The Japanese stock market is really exciting and there are cool stocks like Nintendo (7974) and Mazda (7261) and Square-Enix (9684) and also unique funds like the Love Hotel Fund and the Idol Fund to invest in. Nintendo, by the way is doing really well this year. Check out this chart. If you had bought some of their stock at the beginning of this year you would have doubled your money by now. Since my work is directly related to online stock trading in Japan, I’m planning to write a primer for beginners in English, probably sometime in the new year.

Bic Camera Yurakucho Annex has 2 cool displays to promote Star Trek’s 40th Anniversary this month. I’m only a casual Star Trek fan and cannot speak Klingon or recite from memory the serial numbers of every Starship Enterprise. But I did find the exhibit very interesting and felt like watching some of the original shows again.

Tokyo Game Show 2006
by Roy on September 23, 2006 00:27

http://blog.q-taro.com/archives/pics/2006/09/tgs2006-thumb.jpg
The Tokyo Game Show, otherwise known as TGS, started today out in Makuhari. It was press day and unlike Danny, who is lucky enough to get press passes, my work has nothing to do with games so I can’t justify going to the show as business research. My company does let me go to the financial technology show and online investment fairs, but you know, there are never any girls in bikinis that hand out cool stuff. All I ever get are brochures with lots of charts and numbers and kanji I can’t read. Anyway, Danny’s got his write up posted with lots of photos and more coming over the next 4 days. I’m going to the show on Sunday and still debating whether I will lug my camera with me or not. To be honest, I take a lot of pictures at these shows but I don’t really look at them afterwards and it just takes up hard drive space.

LocoRoco
by Roy on July 31, 2006 20:38

Robbie got me hooked on LocoRoco!! That crazy song makes no sense but I can’t help smiling while playing this game!! In case you’re wondering about the name, it’s derived from ころころ or “korokoro” or “corocoro” which means “rolling.” You use the L and R keys to roll the blobs back and forth. So L + R + corocoro = LocoRoco.

I was searching on google for a picture of a Fuji TV announcer and happen to find this blog by Pekopo, whoever he is. Anyway, he had many screen grabs of lovely ladies on TV and while looking thru his archives I was surprised to find a few of MY IMAGES posted!!! What are the odds? Like this one and this one and this one and this one. I wondered how many more of my images are out there in cyberspace taking on a life of their own. I’m reminded of the first Star Trek film. Will a photo I took be sent off into cyberspace only to become sentient and come back to haunt me in the future? I felt it was just fair for me to post some of his cooler photos here. Like the Great Mazinger (above)

Yurakucho Sofmap
by Roy on April 3, 2006 18:36

I got this postcard in the mail today announcing that they’re closing the Yurakucho Sofmap!! Shock! Now where am I going to go to sell off my stuff? The last day is May 7th which is the last day of Golden Week and also the last day of Bic Camera’s Suica card campaign that allows you to get 3% more points for purchases with the credit card until May 7th. Coincidence? Sofmap just could not or would not compete with Bic because they only offered 1% points on their products and their prices were always a bit higher. Why would you even buy anything at Sofmap? The shop was always dead and I found most of the staff either rude or indifferent (except one guy at the digital camera corner). The new law where you can no longer sell used electronics more than 5 years old may have something to do with it as well. I predict and hope it will be a giant Tsutaya. Yurakucho is in need of a big video/dvd/cd store. Maybe even a Starbucks/Tsutaya/Bar/Karaoke/Onsen would be neat, wouldn’t it?

The Yamato Museum was about 40 minutes by train from the Mazda Museum. We got there just before closing time. I’m glad I brought my 20mm lens converter for my GR because that 1/10 scale Yamato was BIG!! The core exhibit showing Kure city’s history of ship building in the context of WW2 was excellent and I wish I had time to watch all the movies and read all the displays. More pictures below.

Macworld
by Roy on January 10, 2006 14:29

A few years ago, only sites like spymac.com would rumor about what Apple would release at Macworld. But now sites like CNN, NYTimes, BusinessWeek are guessing what next big thing will be coming. I’m trying to decide whether I want to stay up late tonight to watch the keynote speech. I’m hoping there will some sort of Apple Compatible Widescreen TV. That I would definitely fork out cash for.

EDIT: Apparently, there will be no live webcast of the Keynote this year. What?!
:-(
