Google, Yahoo, MSN announced today that they will support a rel=”nofollow” attribute in comment links on blogs via a plugin you can install in MovableType. Basically, it’s supposed to discourage spammers from embedding links in their comments because Google Page Rank will ignore those links. I guess that might work. But in my opinion, this solution is pointless because:
1. If a spammer posts a comment on my blog I’m not gonna leave it there thinking “Ha! Your link is getting ignored by Google!” I’m gonna delete that bugger right away.
2. It takes away the ability for us small time bloggers to raise our page rank by linking between each other.
The point is we want to prevent spammers from commenting in the first place, not just preventing their page rank.
