Miura Hanto Drive

Man, I’m really loving this car. I thought that I would need time to get used to it but it felt completely comfortable the moment I drove off the dealer lot. All the controls are in the right place, the seating position is perfect and the car does exactly what I want it to. Seems like the car is getting more responsive as it gets broken in. The new roadster has exceeded all my expectations and I had a blast driving topless through the twisties of Miura Peninsula today, the second full day of driving. Miura peninsula is only an hour away from Tokyo and makes for a nice little day trip. Although you can’t really go fast, there’s a variety of up down mountain and coastal driving that makes for a relaxing drive. I came here for my first trip when I got my previous car.

That’s Enoshima in the background in the above photos. I drove up to Kamakura before heading home and took these just before sunset.

The first stop was Kanonzaki Park. This park is famous as the place where Commander Perry and the black ships landed. Actually Shimoda is also famous for that. I’m always confused about which place Perry actually landed at. Maybe someone can tell me the history. I’m too lazy and tired to look it up tonight (1) The park is quite big but is mainly made up of rocks and caves. Not what I would consider a park (2) I climbed a bunch of steep steps to get to this lighthouse only to find out I had to pay ¥150 to go up, which I didn’t (3) This man was sketching an oil tanker (4) The only place with grass was fenced off. The weather was magnificent but there were too many bugs flying into my face that I didn’t stay too long.

Afterwards, I drove along Miura Kaigan to Jogashima. The island is at the southern most tip of the peninsula. The area is famous for Maguro (tuna) so I went to get me some at the local tourist spot on the island (1) As you can see it was totally deserted being a weekday and all (2) This shop was the ONLY one open so I went in for lunch (3) I was the only one in the shop and the obasan there was so happy to have a customer she wouldn’t stop talking to me about all kinds of things. I lost interest after 5 minutes and wondered when she was going to take my order (4) Finally, I had a maguro-don for ¥950.

After lunch, I headed up to the park, which is the main attraction of the island. There were lots of giant spider webs and stray cats everywhere (1) You can see Boso peninsula (2) And Izu on the opposite side, maybe hard to tell from this photo (3) This is the bridge to the island which I had to pay ¥150 to cross (4) And a shot of my car in the parking lot

I only drove 167.1km today but it felt like more since I drove mostly on regular roads and not on the expressway. Unless I drive 400km tomorrow I won’t be able to break 1000km this weekend.

I now understand what my students were talking about when they said their hobby was ‘driving’. So what are you listening to while cruising? Does The NC come with a nice stereo? Port for the Ipod?

That mound of maguro would cost be a mint here! Send me some of that too! :-)

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Robbie: It comes with a 6 CD changer and 7 speaker BOSE system. The Stereo plays MP3 CDs so I loaded it with 6 and that’s enough. Don’t need the ipod connectivity.
