Mazingers have arrived

After some of the most extremely frustrating auction experiences, which I won’t go into, I managed to procure a Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger Daigokin. Both brand new. If you’re in the market to buy any gokin make sure you see the items in person. I learned the hard way that the manufacturers of die-cast robot toys will ship their defective ones after they’ve run out of the good ones. The Great Mazinger has a few scratches here and there but that’s nothing compared to the Mazinger Z which has a bum paint job all over except for the left foot. It doesn’t look so bad from a distance but up close you can see bubbles and ripples as if it was painted badly, twice! Despite these defects the figures are magnificent and command attention in any room. They’re big suckers, and heavy too. 6 kilograms of solid die-cast-super-alloy-robot goodness. Beside putting a smile on my face they serve other practical purposes too. If a burglar breaks into my house I can use Great Maz to crush his skull. See the unboxing below.

Here’s the box. It’s big and heavy. Maz is sleeping inside.

It looks a lot smaller in the photos. Most of the joints move but the number of possible poses is limited.

The glass canopy on the pileder is the only plastic part, everything else including Koji is die-cast.

Here’s the other box. It’s bigger and heavier. Great Maz awaits in plastic.

Great Mazinger is absolutely huge. Don’t go swimming with this guy cause he’ll drag you to the bottom of the ocean. Did I tell you it’s heavy? The chest and feet are massive. Slightly exaggerated from the anime.

Truly the best toy gokin ever.

I also found soft vinyl versions of the Mazingers for sale in Akiba so I picked them up too. These are some comparison shots with the daigokin. The soft vinyl ones just don’t have any presence when put side by side with the daigokin.

I need to find a good place to display them.

This completes my collection. Except I might consider getting the Grendizer Daigokin which just came out. We all love Grendizer!!!

I didn’t know you liked Gaiking… btw, what camera specs can you recommend especially for taking photoshoot for both outdoors and toys/figures?

Wow, these are really nice! I’m glad I don’t have any room to even consider starting to collect these. :)

Junn, yeah I like Gaiking too. As for cameras, using a regular lens 50mm with aperture around F1.2-2.0 will give you very nice close up results. Using a regular lens will show the figure without distorting any of the proportions. For these photos though I used a zoom lens and my focal length varies.

Patrick, they are very nice and if I hadn’t moved to a house I would not have considered them either. The figure doesn’t take up much space but the box does.

I remember you saying something about you not being an Otaku.

re : Danny above,
Roy DID mention in his early introduction in the “me” section
>”that day in 1977 when I saw Star Wars and was reborn as a nerd.”

.. which is, the formal translation of the Otaku concept, I presume ?

hi roy!
great idea to let these »sculptures« fight some real life fight – although i guess this won’t happen as soon as you’re expecting… isn’t this just a try to have a good cause for buying more and more of them?

anyways, being an otaku isn’t that bad… but my favourite on your lineup (image 31) still is the little green one!

greetings,

dávid

Both Mazingers look impressive…however how tall are they?

Maybe can put a CD (or a Powerbook) next to Great for scale? Or can biff a burglar swinging Great holding Mazinger blades…!

Mazinger Z was the fun fuzzy story, but Great was a darker story, I think. I like that.
