Getta Robo G Team

Xmas has come early to my house in the form of Getta Robo G (Or Getter Robo, whichever you prefer). I found them at a hobby store in Shimokitazawa a while ago and have been brooding constantly over whether I should buy them or not. It’s not that they were expensive, it’s just that Japan is an anime otaku wonderland full of cool stuff to buy and once you start there is just no end to the collection of toys and books and dvds and figures. I have so much crap back in Canada and when I came to Japan I went cold turkey. I try not to accumulate too much stuff that doesn’t serve some kind of practical purpose. But these Getta Robo G figures were so beautiful and I couldn’t stop thinking about them. Getta Robo G is my favorite anime and I decided that I just had to have them (1) Getta Poseidon is slightly fatter so it came in a bigger box. Originally, I didn’t plan on opening them up but after a few minutes I broke down and took them out (2) And I’m so glad I did. They are so much better out of the box. You’ll never see this scenario with all 3 of them standing side by side in the anime because they are the same robot in different formation. Which is why calling them a team may be incorrect. But anyways. These figures are about 15″ tall and the proportions are the best ones I’ve ever seen of the Getta Team. They were manufactured by Marmit and are pretty old, I think. At the shop, I was told that they were found while cleaning out the store room and recently put for sale. They add some color to the interior of my house and now I’m thinking of putting up some shelves or buying a cabinet for them. I also got a Black Gaiking which I will blog about some other time. It’s still in the box. I’m not as experienced with taking photos of figures like Super Otaku Danny Choo but here are a few after the jump.

Getta Dragon is the main Getta Robo but really my least favorite. I prefer the face of Getta One in the first series.

Getta Raiga is my favorite one. It’s completely the coolest of the three. His chain attack makes me wet my pants.
Sooooo awesome!!

Getta Poseidon is also great although for the photo the legs were adjusted awkwardly and he looks like he has knobby knees.

Here they are in front of my HDTV. I put on the DVD as you can see.
I don’t have a TV stand yet so it’s sitting on the floor along with the Wii and PS3.

The girl at the hobby shop happened to be a former student of mine from more than 10 years ago. I recognized her immediately but she didn’t recognize me. I guess I didn’t leave much of an impression on her or else she has a twin. She put them in these nice bags and then got some more paper to cover up the tops. This is to prevent embarrassment when you take them on the train. You can hide the fact that you’re a total loser spending money on plastic robots. Shops in Japan are very discreet and will do this for you when you buy anime junk and/or adult sex toys. It’s a great country ;-)

Here are some more photos taken with GR of the team on my desk to give you some idea of scale. They are a nice size.

While I was trying to decide whether I should get them I asked a few people which would be considered geekier, having these Getta Robos in my living room or some standard issue Gundam figures. Now, I personally think that these Go Nagai robots from the ’70s are retro and cool in a nostalgic way, while Gundam is more like displaying mecha and in my opinion more otaku. However, everyone seemed to disagree. Brad explained it best saying that anyone in Japan can recognize a Gundam thus making it a mainstream cultural icon and therefore less otaku than Getta Robo. He has a point, but I still think these look nicer. Nothing against Gundams. I would collect some of those too but there are just too many of them.

At any rate, I’m surprised at how happy these figures are making me tonight! I’m taking them to the grave!

eddie, they are better to look at in reality than in the photos.

david, they don’t weigh much cause they’re plastic and costs around 60-70USD.

Andy, there’s something about the plastic ones I got I like better than the metal chogokin. The lines are softer and more “anime” Although those new figures are nice, I’ve never been a fan of the Shin Getter series. I prefer the simple round lines of the original.

Do the Getta Robo G DVD’s come with creditless opening and ending sequences? I have both Getta Robo and Getta Robo G and for some reason, I couldn’t find that feature on those DVD. Although Grendizer, Gaiking and Danguard Ace came with those.

By creditless I mean the opening and ending sequences without any Japanese script on them. Any help would be appreciated.
